[NEW ZEALAND PKESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, January 29. The Pengain, with the southen portion of the outward Frisco mails, sailed for Taranaki and Manukau at 3.30 this afternoon. ( Reefton, January 29. A fire was discovered at 1.30 this morning in a cottage adjoining the Inaugahua Herald office, occupied by Donald Ross and family. Before assistance conid be of avail the fire extended to the Herald office, and both premises were burnt to the ground. Some type and other effects were saved from the Herald office, but the frames and plant generally were consumed. Hoss's family had a very narrow escape for their lives, and saved nothing owing to the rapidity with which the fire spread. Rosss premises are said to be uninsured. The Herald office and plant are resorted to be insured in the Victorian office for £4OO. Dunedin, January 28. At the banquet on board the new dredge to-day, the Hons. William Rolleston and Oliver were present. On the question of harbor improvements and the deepening of the bar, Ramsay, chairman of the Harbor Boards expressed the opinion that within twelve months the largest steamers would be able to cross the bar. January 20. The Maryborough Company of Macetown have lodged in the bank a cake of 720uz. from 250 tons of stone, Timar", January 28. I'enton sued C. W. Duckworth for lis 6d, expenses incurred attending on defendant in answer to a postal card containing "Please call on Duckworth. Hear something to advantage." On plaintiff calling he was served with a small account for 3s 6d, which he denied owing, and consequently brought the action for expenses. The Bench gave judgment for railway fare, 9s, and costs. " Society,"the publication which takes the place of the " Liberty," was issued to-day. It is a great improvement in every respect on its predecessor, and betrays no sign at present of the personalities that made the " Liberty" so offensive. Acckland, January 28. Fiji news states that the Rev. Thomas Jaggar, Wesleyan minister, Kankaupaka, is dead. He was one of the first missionaries who came out in the John Wesley for Fiji.
