Mr Rolleston, accompanied hy Mr Gerhard Mueller and Mr Stratford, Warden, left here for Kumara, via Paroa and Marsden, at 1.30 p.m., and should reach Kumara about 5.30 p.m. [NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, January 16. A despatch has been received from the Agent-General, in respect to the establishment of a direct steam service. He is negotiating with an eminent shipping firm on the snbjecr, and plans for vessels fitted for the service have been prepared. A conference will be held between those interested in the service, when the plans and the. whole of the proposals on the subject will be discussed, and ho hopes to forwatd particulirs by the next mail. The letter from Mr Blaine to the Foreign Office, conveying the acknowledgement of telegrams of condolence on the death of President Garfield, has been received by his Excellency the Governor through the Colonial Office. Mr Blaine, after saying that he had unfeigned gratification in acknowledging through the United States Legation in London, !t the many singularly affecting telegrams” that had’ reached his Department, says the oneness of the residents of every part of the wide British domain with the family of the dead chief magistrate, and with the American people in their afflicting trial, “ has touched our hearts very deeply." Ashburton, January 16. A fire at Rakaia last night destroyed a saddler’s shop, owned and occupied by N. Walsh. The insurances on the building and stock amount to £376. It is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. A child, son of Mr Woolley, Wakanui, a settler, fell into a creek near hia father’s house to-day,- and was drowned.

Medical as-istance was given, and at latest accounts he was progressing fttvurably. From a paper Found in the roorii, want of money was the incentive to the deed. Duxedix, January 10. Thomas Price, bootmaker, of Princes street, committed suicide early this morning by shooting himself. He put a loaded shotgun to his mouth and pulled the trigger. He had been d linking heavily since Christmas'. Deceased was a widower, aged 57. ; Oamaru, January 17. The match beetweeii the Englisli Eleven and the Oamaru Twenty-two Was resumed to-day. The weather was fine, tlie attendance moderate. The Englishmen resumed their innings', which closed for 146. Emmett, who is sick, was absent. Midwinter, 40; Barlow, 36; Bates, 3.3.
