BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, January 16. Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Connanght has given birth to a daughter. The death is announced to-day of Vice-Chancellor the Hon. Sir Richard Malins, aged 77. Pahis, January 16. Further intelligence is to hand regarding the recent massacre of three French priests at Ghadames, on the Algerian frontier of Tripoli. It has been conclusively proved that the Arabs who committe.d the murder were instigated by the Cadi of the district, and it is expected that measures will be shortly taken by the French Government fur the summary punishment of the offenders. * LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, January 1 6. Av rived this morning, the Pacific mail steamer from San Francisco via Auckland. The formal transfer of H.M.S. Wolverine from the Imperial Government to that of New -South Wales, took place to-day. The inquiry into the wreck of the steamship Wotonga was concluded yesterday. The Marine Board found that the captain steered a wrong course, and that the mate, who was in charge at the time of the accident, should hare summoned the captain. Both have been called upon to show cause why their certificates should not be suspended. The hearing of the charge will commence next Monday. Melbouune. January 16. Two fresh cases of small-pox of a mild form are reported to have occm red at the quarantine station. There are now nine persons suffering from the disease.
