The English cricketers arrived today by steamer, except Shrewsbury and Lilly white, who came on by the train. The weather promises to be line for the match, which begins to-morrow. The New Zealand Fruit Preserving Company opened their works to-dav, a quantity of jam being turned out in the presence of a number of visitors. Christchurch, January 11. The Supreme Court was occupied all day with the case Cailey re Wilkin and Co., in which plaintiff sought to compel the South British Company to pay the balance due on the policy for £4OO, covering crops on his farm at Balcairn. Defendant had a lien on the crops for £2OO odd, and held plaintiff’s policy. The crops, when stacked, were burned, and the insurance company refused to pay more than £241 17s 6d, which they alleged to he the total value of the crops. This sum the defendants had accepted in full of all demands. After hearing the evidence of a number of witnesses, the jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £55 11s 4d.
