[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Taupo, December 19. The ascent of the volcano of Tongariro was successfully made by Mr Manson, an American tourist, who, with five guides, climbed to the.summit of the crater known as Olivia on Wednesday last. He desciibes the volcano as
being an active geyser, throwing streams of boiling rami fully 500 ft. high. The interior of the cone is surrounded by some 30 or more boiling springs and sulphureous steam holes. The altitude on the summit of the cone is 7600 ft. The tliehiloinetef registered six degrees below zero. The party were compelled through a sno\V storm to remain in thC "crater all night, and nearly perished with the Cold. Manson is the. first Pakeha whom the Natives have permitted to make the ascent of the sacrel mountain. Others have attempted it, bnt rtmre captured by the Natives. The burning mountain is in the King country, arid this don cession to a Pabehi may be considered as strong evidence of their good feeling and of the subsidence of the animosities which have hitherto existed between the two races.
