LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS, Melbourne, December 17,
The cricket match between the English team and eleven of Victoria was resumed to-day. The attendance was large, though the weather was showery during the day, and, owing to the rain,the wicket was not so lively as yesterday. The Victorians continued their first innings, which closed fur 251 ; Edwards made 65. The fielding of the English was weak. The latter then went in for the first innings, and were all disposed of for 146; Bates being caught for 41, Scotton bowled for 28, and Shaw caught for 25. The Englishmen, being 105 behind the Victorians, followed their innings, and when stumps were withdrawn for the day had put 47 for the loss of 2 wickets. Selby was caught for 32. Sydney, December 19. A s*orm of unusual violence, accompanied by heavy rain, with thunder and lightning, was experienced here to-day. No damage, however, has been done to the buildings in the city. A destructive fire has occurred at Newcastle. The losses are covered by insurances in various Australian offices.
