The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1881.

We have been favored by Mr Dungan, Couniy Chairman, with the following telegram, just received from the Hon. Mr Rollestou re water-supply and No. 2 reservoir ;

To Mr P. Dungan, Chairman Westland County Council.

I shall go to Wellington on Saturda}’-, and visit the West Coast at once afterwards. In the meantime, no unnecessary delay shall take place.—W. Rolleston.

Two shocks of earthquake wore very generally experienced in Kumara and its environs this morning. The first is described as a sliglit shock, appearing to come from the north-west, or from the sea, and acting in effect like a sudden gust of wind. This was followed by a smart shock lasting only two seconds, the direction being most generally given as from

south-west to north-east, and in its effects like an upheaval. Three or four clocks which were known to be pretty accurate in time (one of which was the post-office outer clock) stopped at 7.35. This may, therefore, bo taken as the correct time of the earthquake. The pendulums of the three clocks referred to oscillate in the same parallel line as the earthquake wave is supposed to have rolled, that is parallel with Main sti'eet. Singular l to say, the inner post-office clock, which had stopped during last evening, was, by the earthquake shock set a-going. We have not heard of any serious damage occurring; but two or three galvanized-iron water tanks have been burst by the vibration of the water. The shock was experienced at Greyniouth, and is the heaviest felt on the Coast since 1868. One informant reports a shock having occurred at 2 o’clock this morning.

Mr David Madden one of the three candidates for the Greyniouth electoral district, addressed the electors of Westbrook on Saturday evening last. There was a large attendance. Mr M. Maloney presided. At the conclusion of Mr Madden’s address, '■ Mr John Corrigan moved and Mr Christopher Curtain seconded — “That Mr David'Madden is a fit and proper person to represent the Greyniouth district in tliQ House of Representatives.” The motion #as carried. An important public meeting taking place in Kumara at the same hour precluded the possibility of our giving an extended notice of Mr Madden’s views on this occasion, as was our intention.

The Union Company’s s.s. Alh&mbfa leaves Melbourne for the West Coast, via Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, on the lOth inst. She should reach West Coast ports on the 22nd, when she will take her usual course to Newcastle and Melbourne.

The Hospital Committee will hold their usual fortnightly meeting at the Secretary’s office this evening, instead of tomorrow evening.

Mr Blake will address the electors at Kumava to-raorrow evening, at the Theatre Royal, at 8 o’clock ; ard at Dillman’s Town on Thursday. Mr Seddon (desiring not to clash with Mr Blake’s meeting at Diliman’s Town) vail address the electors at Kumara on Wednesday evening, instead;df Thursday as previously announced. -

Mrs Mary Ann Wagshaw, who has been an inmate of the Kumara Hospital since the 28th September last, suffering from consumption, died on Saturday evening. Her native place was Scotland.

There are only two patients now in the Kumara Hospital—Peter Doonan, consumptive, and Ned Simpson, an elderly man, who about a month ago, when in the act of falling a tree, was thrown down, the tree falling on him and inflicting a flesh wound about C iiiches long on one of his legs. He has, however, so far recovered as that he will be discharged cured in a few days. “ Christmas is coming!” says Mr Rudkin, and consequently the season when he lays in an entirely new stock of Christmas fruits for Christmas pies and puddings. These have now arrived, as have also a lot of Christmas hams. And for those persons who find it necessary to stimulate their appetite .or digestive organs, a fine assortment of wines, ales, porters, brandies, and whiskies have been procured. Then he has imported large quantities and new designs in glassware and crockeryware to replace (it must be admitted with much forethought) that damaged by the earthquake this morning.

Pick and shovel men who are wanting work will find employment’ ; on* the Paringa and Haast road, by applying to Mr Edward Ryan, at M'Goldrick’s Club Hotel, Hokitika.

Tenders are invited up to Friday, 9th December, at 3 p.m., by the Greyniouth and Kumara Tramway Company (Limited), for the supply of 60,000 feet of timber, in logs. Specifications to be seen at the Tramway Office, Greymouth; and at Teremakau.
