GOVERNMENT PRIZE-FIRING RULES.

The following rules for the competition for the Government prizes, 1881 j are published in the Gazette for general information:— 1. The sura of £BOO having been voted by the General Assembly for prizes, the amount has been divided pro rata amongst the Volunteer Corps, according to the nominal strength oil the 31st August, 1881. The amount allotted for Westland is £l6 18s. 2. The whole sum voted having been set apart for prizes, no claims for marking, &c., can be entertained. Each district must arrange tor markers at its own expense. 3. A Committee, consisting of thd Officer Commanding and not less than two senior Volunteer officers in each district, will divide the amounts set apart for their respective districts into such prizes as they m&y and to be competed for at such ranges, &c., as they may appoint. 4. The firing for the prizes must be in accordance;'ymh the general rules published. 5. The competitions to take place at such times as may he directed by the Officer Commanding the district, and they are to be concluded before the 31st Janua.’y, 1882. 6. Returns showing the*conditions under which the competitions took place, the names of the prize winners, and the several amounts of the prizes, together with the full scores of all competitors, are to be sent to the Undersecretary for Defence nob later than the 2Sth February, 1882.
