We (West Coast Times) deeply regret having to record the death of three children during this week, from diphtheria, in the family of Mr Joseph Halligan, of Kanievi. On Sunday last the eldest boy, aged nine, fell a victim to the dreadful scourge, and on Tuesday following, a child about two years old also died. On Thursday morning, the eldest girl, about seven years, was also fatally attacked, and a fourth is reported to be yet in danger. The deepest sympathy is expressed everywhere by the friends of Mr and Mrs Halligan, and quite an alarm has set in amongst many parents in Hokitika and Kanieri. A number of children are reported to be under medical care from the same complaint throughout the district. Letters of naturalisation under “The Aliens Act, 1880,” have been issued in favour of Joseph Mandl, brewer, Hokitika, and Geoffrey William Turkert, butcher, Ross. Mr Spiers announced the arrival of his annual supply of elegantly-bound books; Christmas cards, and toys, which surpass all previous shipments in beauty and design ; and the variety cannot fail to attract and please parents, sweethearts; and friends who are anxious to dispense some special present, so customary at this festive season of the year, whether it be' as a token of deserving industry, youthful charms, or natural affection. There is such a demand for the Westport Colliery Company’s coal that although the Celestia’s cargo had been disposed of to the Railway Department previous to arrival at Lyttelton, it had to be cut up in small lots to suit customers, among which was the Union Company’s s.s. Penguin, which put in short of coal. There was plenty of Newcastle coal in Port, bub such is the liking for the Westport coal that Captain Malcolm would take no other. Official returns show how 'vast are the flocks of sheep owned in New Zealand.
