To-night the amateur dramatic performance takes place, at the Adelphi Theatre, for the benefit of St. Patrick’s School. The sensational drama “ The Flower Girl ” will be the principal feature of the entertainment, which will be produced by the Amateur Dramatic Club, who have already earned the most favorable criticisms of all classes of this com-
munity. The “Musical Bouquet” is now filled up in the programme, and those who enjoy singing, sentimental and comic, will hud a copious budget for to-night. We are informed that a stupid rumor has been circulated to the effect that under the new licensing law the entertainment had been prohibited; and we are requested to notify that such is not the case, there being no truth whatever in the disingenous statement. The Christchurch mail arrived this afternoon at the usual hour. Writs for the election of members to the New Parliament are to be issued on Thursday next. A sitting of the Resident Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday afternoon, before E. Barff, Esq., J.P., when a most painful case was brought forward. From the evidence it appeared that a man living near Westbrook, formerly a miner, had during the last few months conducted liiraself in a manner which justified his friends in taking steps in his own interest to provide for his being properly looked after and attended to. He had stated to one of the witnesses that he had eaten nothing for ten days, but. declined to receive the offer of food made to him. The accused was sentenced to imprisonment in the Hokitika Gaol for a calendar month, the Bench remarking that the prisoner would not be submitted to the indignity of hard labor, as the case did not appear to be one which called for that additional punishment. The s.s. Alhambra is* announced, in the Union Steamship Co.’s Pocket Guide for November, to leave Port Chalmers about the 16th inst., Lyttelton, 17th ; Hokitika and Greymouth, 19th ; and to arrive at Newcastle on the 25th, and Melbourne on the 28th ; leaving Melbourne again on the same route about the Bth December, Mr James Holmes has resolved, in answer to repeated solicitations, to personally address the electors next Friday evening, at Reynolds’ Hotel, Dillman’s Town, before or after Mr J. F. Byrne, as may be agreed between these two candidates. Meantime Mr Holmes publishes a general address to the electors of the Arahura Riding, which will be found in another column. For the Kanieri Riding Messrs Andrew Gumming, Frederick Dale, Henry Patz, and Charles Rose were yesterday nominated as members of the Westland County Council. And for Totara Riding, Messrs Joseph Grhmnond, Rudolph. Hirter, and John B. Lopas. The polling-day for all the ridings is fixed for Wednesday next, the 16th inst. Tui street, the terror of nocturnal pedestrians, is now being put in such a state of repair that traffic will shortly be able to take place without danger to life or limb. The contractor for the work evidently understands his business thoroughly, and all that now remains to be done is the metalling of a few chains of the road. During the excursion season of 1881-82, that is, during the months of December, January, and February next, the Union Steamship Company will issue return tickets from West Coast ports at a reduction of 39 per cent off two single fares. Holders of such tickets must embark on the return journey on or before the 31st March. The single fares are—-saloon £ls ; steerage £9. The first day’s racing of the Christchurch Spring Meeting was held yesterday. The weather was fine, and there was a good attendance. The Grey River Argus supplies the following as the results of the day’s racing ;—Free Handi-cap-Billingsgate 1, Chancellor 2, Talent 3. Derby—The Dauphin 1, Peeress colt 2, Nonpareil 3. C. J. C. Handicap— Grip 1, Louis d’Or 2, Lady Emma 3. Welcome Stakes—Siesta 1, Vanguard 2, Amazon 3.
