There arc over 200 names already to be printed in the Kuimu-a Supplementary Electoral Roll, so that the number of votes in this district now reaches 2250, being more than half the estimated population of the district. This must be taken as one of the most convincing proofs of the absurdity of the basis upon which the Representation Act of the last session of Parliament ha* been founded. The Electoral Roll for the Buller District lias been printed, and contains 1230 names. Messrs Dungan and Barrowman addressed the electors at Dillman's Town, at Reynolds' Empire Hotel, last evening. There was a very large attendance. Votes
of their being fit and proper persons to represent the Arahura Riding in the Westland County Council were passsed in each case unanimously. A full report of the meetings is unavoidably held over. It required a tolerably powerful telescope to see the transit of Mercury across the sun's disc to-day, and as the solar orb was clouded for the most part of the time, few persons only had an opportunity of observing the interesting phenomenon. To-moi'row being a general holiday, the Warden's and R.M. Courts will sit on Thursday next, at noon. The entertainment in aid of St. Patrick's School takes place at the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow evening. The total force at the Front is summed up on the 2nd inst., by a correspondent of the Christchurch Press in round numbers as follows : —Constabulary, nearly 900 ; Volunteers from other places, nearly 1000 ; local Volunteers, 500 or 600 ; in all something like 2500 men. The Government have been obliged to refuse all offers from every part of the colony, as Mr Bryce telegraphed very positively not to send any more at present, as he did not want them, and an excessive number would embarrass rather than assist him. The Government were very sorry to disappoint the numerous corps who have so readily offered their services, but it could not be helped. Their services may yet be required, although it is of course hoped that such will not be the case. The only prize in Abbott's sweep which went to Westport was drawn by Mr S. Falla, who wins about £45.
