Those who have not yet seen the Lyons' Tourists yet should not lose the last opportunity of doing so, which is to-night. Those who have heard them will be sure, if possible, to go again, for the plays seem more enjoyable each succeeding evening. To-night "Conrad and Lizette" will be given, and, by special request, the sparkling burlesque "The Isle of Lilipitam" is to be repeated.
The mail coach left the Bealey this morning early, and East Coast and Australian mails arrived by it at the Kumara Post-office at 3.20 p.m. Mr G. G. FitzGorald is expected to arriive hei'O this evening on his way to Hokitika.
According to announcement Mr H. W. Sandle, of Stafford, one of the numerous candidates for a seat in the County Council of Westland, repaired yesterday evening to Reynolds' Hotel, Dillman's Town, to address the electors of that locality. Shortly after eight o'clock, about 150 persons being present, it was proposed that Mr M'Connoil take the chair. It was also proposed that Mr Rogers take the chair. Eventually the former mounted the platform, followed by Mr Sandle. Mr M'Connon briefly introduced Mr Sandle to the audience, and asked on his behalf a patient hearing. From the very first, however, it appeared as if there were a certain party or clique who were bent on interrupting the speaker. Possibly they had just grounds, and it seemed as if they had the sympathy of a large number of the audience. But, be that as it may, Mr Sandle made continuous efforts to get a hearing, asserting that he had on several occasions in the County Council voted for the reduction of the gold duty, and on one or two occasions voted for its total abolition. It was true that as Chairman of the Finance Committee he had forwarded to Mr R. C. Reid, M.H.R., at Wellington, during the sitting of Parliament, a communication representing that the County Council were largely in debt, and that if the gold duty were abolished it would be necessary that Parliament should provide some equivalent. But the interruptions were so frequent and of such an uproarious character, that, notwithstanding repeated solicitations from the chair and several minors that the candidate should have "a fair hearing" before being condemned, the entreaties were of no avail, and the meeting was brought to an abrupt termination after one hour's continuous turmoil. A vote of thanks was proposed to the chairman, which Mr Sandle seconded. And afterwards Mr J. Skipper proposed Mr Sandle as a fit and proper person to represent them in the County Council, which motion was seconded by Mr D. M'Kinnon. Three cheers were given for " the Chairman," and three for " Mr Seddon."
Mr P. Dungan will address the electors of the Arahura Riding, at Dillman's Town, on Monday evening next, at 8 o'clock. The steamer Wallace, from Wellington and Nelson, arrived at Hokitika yesterday.
Nominations for the return of three members to represent the Arahura Riding may be forwarded to the Court House, Stafford, addressed to the Returning Officer, up to noon on Tuesday next, the Bth November. Nomination papers may be obtained from Mr M'Ennis, Clerk of the Warden's Court. The work of blocking the sludge-channel has now been fairly commenced, and blocks in large numbers are continually arriving. That highly useful invention the telephone is now introduced with success in the workings of the Long-tunnel tail-race, by which communication is now lished between parties working at the mouth of the race, and those who are engaged in sluicing. The advantage of this will be known to all miners. It will, we opine, be an indispensable institution in connection with the sludge-channel, when completed. For the convenience of parties wishing to attend the New Zealand Metropolitan Race Meeting, which will commence at Christchurch on Tuesday next, and also the Canterbury Agricultural Show, Mr Rugg announces that he will run a special coach to Springfield to-morrow, leaving his hotel, Main street, Kumara, at five o'clock in the morning. Messrs Girdwood, Lahman, and Co. will, on Monday next, dispose of a really choice lot of prime fat bullocks, fat sheep, and lambs, at the Preston Yards, Greymouth. The Lyoll Times learns that the injuries to Mrs O'Rourke, who jumped from the Hampden coach at the time of the late accident, included a broken ankle and one sprained ankle, besides being very severely bruised and shaken about the body. Late accounts state that Mrs O'Rourke is recovering rapidly. Mr J. G. Blackett, Resident Engineer for Nelson district, drove through from Nelson to Lyell on Friday last, in a buggy, being the first to make the through trip per vehicle over the new main road. The object of his visit (the Lyell Times reports) was to pass the Matira contract, and he informs us that the work has been carried out most satisfactorily. The road was taken over from the contractors, Messrs Cullen and May, last Friday. Mr Blackett has also taken levels, &c, at the sites of the proposed bridges across the Matira and Hope rivers.
