The departure was witnessed and loudly cheered by between 2000 and 3000 people. Dunedin, October 31. Lieutenant-Colonel Stavely to-day received a telegram from Government that the services of the Naval Brigade would not be required, as they have the full number required. Auckland, October 31. The Hinemoa took nearly 200 raenj 20 of them recruits, for the Armed Constabulary, in addition to the Thames Contingent, which was swelled by further enlistments in Auckland. Captain Northcroft was a passenger to take a comWnd on the plains. On the Hinemoa leaving the Onehunga Wharf at 1.30 p.m., the troops were enthusiastically cheered by a large crowd. Thomas Hunter, fish hawker, wad iound dead iii his bed. November 1. Abbott's £IO,OOO sweep on the Melbourne Cup—First Prize, £ISOO, Mason and Edgar; second prize, £7OO, the employes of tiie Auckland Gas Company; third prize, £4OO, Dickey and Alfred Isaacs. The second sweep was unlimited, for £3lsß—First prizey £6OO, Levinsolm and Young; second prize, £3OO, Bennett; third prize, £l5O, Wales. All were in the Auckland province.
