An influential deputation of leading Irishmen waited yesterday upon Gladstone at Knowsley, to lay before Lin; certain facts in connection with the payment of tent in lieland. The Premier, in reply, stated that the Lmd Commission had so far shown that it worked well, and he was hopeful its decisions would result in seeming permanent peace and prosperity in Ireland. Vienna. October 27. King Humbert and Queen Margherita arrived here to-day train Rome on a visit to the Emperor Francis Joseph. Their Majesties were received wn.h great enthusiasm on their entry into the city. Berlin, October 27. The general elections to the R ichstag commenced to-day throughout the Empire. The contents which took place for the lepreseutation of this city resulted in the return of L heial candidates by considerable majorities. VICTORIA RAGING CLUB.—SPRING MEETING, 1881. Twenty horses started. Hilarious ran well for a milo
and a halt, but fell behind at the end of the course. The finish was very close. Maribyrnong Plate, five furlongs— Segenhoe, 1 y Guesswork and Navigator ran a dead heat for second place. Time Imin. 4sec. Segenhoe won easily. TUB DERBY. Victoria Derby, one mile and a-half, the following twelve horses started ; Sonin us, Santa Claus, Commotion, Flying Jib, Darebin, The Cockney, Sardonyx, Monmouth, Somerset, Royal Maid, Spectre, and Spinningdale. The race resulted as follows : Darebin ... ... ... 1 Santa Claus ... ... 2 Commotion ... ... 3 Santa Claus made the running all the way, Somnus lying second and third until he reached the distance post, when he collapsed and died away coming up the straight, Somerset, the favorite, was last nearly all the way. Darebin was lying in a good position at the distance post, when he went to the front and won comfortably. Time 2mins, 41|-secs., the fastest on record.
