PRESIDENT GARFIELD.
The first original sonnet on the death of the renowned United States President comes to us in the Sydney Echo, evening paper, of the 19th nit.—the day c.f the first cable announcement of his decease, and is as follows : Bow down thy head, and let the stars that shine With stainless lustre thro' the Christian world— Freedom's proud banner—be a moment furled, To mark what grief, great Nation, must be thine. The just man and the good man—half divine From his brave boyhood—to be foullv hurl'd J Into the straits of doom, and darkly whirl'd Into the sea of death, ere life's decline ! Far and profoundly over human hearts A bitter-sorrow falls, that such should be— That such a life should.end by such a hand ; But an imperishable splendour starts From the dim ashes of the Just—for Thee Another ray of glory, Mighty Land ! Henry Hallokan. Sydney, Sept. 21, 1881.
