[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Wellington, October 20. His Excellency the Governor returned rather unexpectedly from IWnka last night. It is understood that his hurried departure from Fiji was owing to despatches he received by a steamer arriving at Levtika, from either Brisbane rir Cooktown. The New Zealand Government were not aware of any despatches having been forwarded. The Hon. Mr Bryce has again accepted the position of Native Minister. Christchurch, October 19. In the case of James White, Frank Carey, Jane Brown, and Margaret Sutton, tried yesterday with robbery with violence, White and Sutton were acquitted, there not being sufficient evidence against them. At twenty minutes past ten last night, the jury returned a verdict of robbery without violence against the other two. To-day the quartette were indicted on another charge of robbery when armed. The Crown refused to prosecute the two women, and the men were ibund guilty. His Honor sentenced Jane Brown, on the conviction of yesterday, to 18 months' imprisonment, with hard labor ; Frank Carey, on two convictions, the first to thtee years, and the second to eight ye u\->' p.-nal servitude, the first sentence to be included in the second ; James White, to six years' penal servitude. John Spa rices, malicious injury to property, got three months' hard labor ; .Charles Chamberlain, indecent assault, was acquitted; William John Wilson, for indecent assault, got three years' penal servitude ; Ftederick Lane, larceny, two years' hard labor ; William Fr , indecpnt assault, twelve months' hard labor; William Douglas, and William Bowden, larceny from the person, two years hard labor. Dunedix, October 19.
A tramway nccideut occurred to-day to a schoolboy named Adams, who was " larking; " on the car while standing at Botanical Gardens. The conductor saw him after the car started, and told him to get off. The boy jumped aud fell, and the wheel tore the flesh off the lej» from the thigh almost to the ankle. He was taken to the Hospital. Wanganui, October 19.
