RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Wednesday, October 19. [Before H. A. Stratford, Esq., R.M.] KUMARA 'HOSPITAL COMMITTEE V. GEORGE STEWART. This was a suit for the sum of £6 for maintenance during defendant’s stay in the institution. Defendant admitted the debt, but deprecated the action of the committee in suing without sending in any account. Mr W. Nicholson, secretary to the Hospital Committee reported having, by authority, sent defendant and others notice of the committee’s intention to sue for the amount, and produced a letter forwarded by him to defendant, of which the following is a copy : To Mr Geo. Stewart. Sir—By resolution of the Hospital Committee, I am instructed to inform you that unless the amount (viz., £6) due by you for maintenance while in the Hospital is paid on or beforo Wednesday next, the 28th inst., legal proceedings will be taken to recover it. —I am, &0., ° W. Nicholson, Secretary Kmnara Hospital. Kumara, Sept. 21, 1881. The Magistrate considered that the amount owing being mentioned in the letter was sufficient for the purpose, and gave judgment for the amount claimed.
