A BOAT RACE ON THE DANUBE
On August 11, a boat race of some international interest was rowed on the Danube, below Vienna. The American Cornell University crew which, if I mistake not, has late ! y been in England, had come over to Vienna to try their strength with the “ Nautic Club.” The latter had, it appears, thrown down tiie gauntlet to the American rowing clubs, in consequence of some disparaging remarks on Austrian oarsmen that appeared last March in an American sporting paper. The distance was about three miles, one half of the way being itgainst a strong current. The course extended from the Imperial Bridge to that of Filing-Josef, which was the turning post. Bull crews rowed in nou-coxwain four-oared outriggers, the American craft being built by Meesrs Aters and son, and the Viennese by H. Olasper. A large crowd assembled on both sides of the river long before the start, and the greatest interest was manifested in the proceedings, which were in every respect admirably managed. The two crews appeared to be of about equal strength dining the first part of the race, and probably, if the course had run in a straight, line, the coolest would have been a hot one, but at the second bridge, situated much further than the crowd could see, the American crew dropped off* possibly in consequence of some accident. Be that as it may, the Viennese came back alone, and I need hardly tell you that their creditable victory was enthusiastically cheered by those on shore.
