[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Christchurch, October 10. A crowded meeting was held re the West Coast Railway to-night, and resolutions were passed affirming the desirability of at once proceeding with the line, and the necessity for forming a company to undertake its construction. 7000 shares had been taken up at "the commencement of the meeting, and 1600 were taken in the hall. A woman named Manage, whose house was burned down a few days ago, and who has been in a very despondent state since, tried to cut her throat with a table knife to-day, but did not inflict very severe injuries. A. lad of 16 was committed for trial to-day, for an indecent assault on a girl. A couple of prostitutes was nearly drowned in the river to-day. A child was acting as coxswain. They had to be treated by a doctor before they were brought round. Wellington, October 10. A destructive fire occurred at Fielding last night, when the shop and dwelling house of Keen, a shoemaker, were burned to the ground. The insurance amounted to £2OO in the Standard office. Keen estimates his loss at fully £4OO. The origiu of the firo is unknown.
Mrs Levell was to-day fined £2 aud costs for Sunday trading.
