In our report yesterday of the Local School Committee meeting on Monday last, we stated that “It was resolved that the head-teacher, Mr Woodward, be instructed to collect the amounts due for requisites for the past quarter and then discontinue the collection in future until further instructions, as fines will not now be required.” It should have read “as fires will not now be required.”

We acknowledge receipt from the Government Printer of the first 184 pages of “ The Statutes of New Zealand,” passed during the session of Parliament which has just been brought to a close. Madame Lotti Wilmot, the celebrated inspirational lectnress, will make her appearance in the Theatre Royal, Kmuara, on Tuesday evening next, the 11th October, when she will deliver her popular and mirth-provoking lecture on “ Courtship and Marriage.” Of the former, an old bachelor tells us that “ the pleasantest part of a man’s life is generally that which passes in courtship, provided his passion be sincere, and the party beloved hind

with discretion.” On the other subject wc will wait to hear Lotti.

At their meeting last night, the Borough Council resolved to do away with the services of the clay-labor man ; a month’s notice to be given. They also resolved to dispense with the office of Borough Surveyor ; but would, after three months’ notice, retain the services of the present officer, if at the end of that term he choose to retain the position of Town Clerk and Borough Surveyor at a reduced salary of £2OO.

A miner in from Barrytown yesterday afternoon (the Argus reports) stated that a fatal accident occurred there in the morning to a miner named Gordon, who was killed in a tunnel by the timbers giving way.

The Christchurch Telegraph contains a somewhat startling (if.tr ue) item of cable intelligence in the following: “The American Fenians, led away by their rabid resentment against England, propose to make an attack upon Fremantle, a port in Western Australia,” The building for the Bank of New Zealand at Patea is to cost £2llO. The Patea Evening News says:—“The bank are confident that when the new building is finished it will be the finest occupied by the Bank of New Zealand in the North Island.”
