The quarterly Licensing Court was held at the Court House, yesterday, J. O’Hagan, J. Cow, and A. C. Campbell, Esqrs., Licensing Commissioners, presiding. There were only two applications to be dealt with. Thomas Wilkinson applied to have the license for the City Hotel, Main road, transferred to him from Kate Mackintosh; and the last-named applied to have the license of the European Hotel transferred to her from Carl Schultheis, Both applications were granted. There were no applications in connection with the Greenstone Court.
The poll for the election of three Borough Councillors takes place to-morrow at the Town Hall, commencing at 9 a.m., and terminating at 6 p.m. There are four candidates for the three seats —Messrs O. W. Anderson, Jas. Horne, J. H. King, and G. R. Rudkin. Mr King addresses the burgesses through our columns. The mail coach from Christchurch arrived this afternoon at 3.15.
The New Zealand Government Gazette, August 25th, is to hand which contains the notification, under date 23rd August, 1881, “ His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to form the Kumara Contingent of the First Westland Rifle Volunteers into a separate corps, to be designated ‘The Kumara Rifle Volunteers.’”
Mr Justice Richmond lectured lately in Wellington in confutation of Materialism. Of all the Governors who have been in Australasia, none retired from our shores with greater wealth than did Sir Henry Barkly. It is said that he amassed, by land speculation alone, over £40,000, during his seven years’ reign. Scott-Siddons, the divorced husband of the actress of that name, is in Yarra Bend madhouse, Melbourne.. The unfortunate man has drunk himself into chronic delirium. An octopus, measuring 12 feet by 12 feet, was caught in a net at Melbourne the other day, and fought desperately after its capture. The well-known Lynch Family Bellringers and Vocalists and English Specialty Combination arrived in Brisbane after a very successful overland tour from Melbourne, extending over a period of nearly six months.
Professor Haselmayer, having concluded his Sydney season, goes to Bathurst, Orange, and Dnbbo. The fastest mile ever known to be trotted in the world has just been done at Pittsburg, Pa, by Maud S. She was backed for a special purse of 2500 dols., to beat her best recorded time, for one mile in harness. Iler time was- on this occasion Ist quarter, 33secs; 2nd quarter, 32| ; 3rd quarter, 31-|; 4th quarter, 33|; mile, in 2min. Maud S. is the property of Mr W. H. Vanderbilt, the railroad king, and is the fastest trotter in the United States. In addition to the fastest steam yacht afloat, Mr Loi'illard owns a wonderful team of trotters, the wheelers sixteen and the leaders seventeen hands high, , which do the mile in three minutes with a loaded coach behind them. It is said that in fresh air a distance of two feet is sufficient to prevent catching contagious diseases. For a list of prizes in a Grand Art Union, see fourth page. —Advt.
