THE WATER-SUPPLY COMMITTEE AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PROSPECTING ASSOCIATION.

1 [to the editor.] I Sin—The Water-supply Committee, j in carrying out the business entrusted to them by the public, found it neces- | sary to incur a little expense, and most j people will admit that the expenditure | was judicious. When in difficulties re money matters, the committee of the Prospecting Association, without being asked, gave us (the Water-supply Committee) £5 to help us on, the Chairman subsequently stating in a good-natured way that if further assistance was wanted that it would most likely be forthcoming. Such assistance has since been required and asked for by the Water-supply Committee j and a meeting of the Prospecting Association Committee was called to consider the matter, at which meeting members were satisfied to leave it in the hands of the subscribers ; and it was resolved to call a meeting of the subscribers to the funds to finally deal with, the subject. Last Monday night the subscribers' meeting took place, aud a " Motion was carried" to pay over to the Water-supply Committee, the sum solicited, £7 7s 6d ; and the Watersupply Committee believing that a majority vote having been carried for the payment of the money, Mr Morris secretary obtained the cheque from Mr Nichotson, secretary of the Prospecting Association. Mr Pearn, as Treasurer, was waited upon, and he signed the cheque for the amount voted ; but as the cheques have to be conntersigned by Mr Blake, that gentleman, on presentation, refused puint blank to sign the cheque—because he, forsooth, was not in favor of granting it. The members of the Water-supply Committee can well appreciate the compliment tendered from such a quarter. As any further action in the matter rests entirely with the subscribers, we thought it our duty to m.ike known the manner of our treatment by Mr Blake, and acknowledge, at the same time, our warmest

thanks to the subscribers who in so manly a manner and with generous sympathy came forward to enable u« to get over ou rd i fficu 11 ies, F. RARROWMANi P\ Dungan, W. Morris. Sub-committee-. DilloWa Town, Aug. 31, 1881.
