BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, August H. Meetings were held last night in this city, and at various other places in England, at which speeches were made and resolutions passed, expressing approval of the policy of the Government in regard to the Irish Land Bill. Other meetings, with a similar object in view, are being organised in other places.
August 15. The Morning Post to-day, in a leading article on the position of affairs in regard to the Irish Land Bill, warmly approves of the opposition of the Marquis of Salisbury and his supporters, and of the amendments to the provisions of the measure brought about at their instigation in the House of Lords. The latest intelligence from Afghanistan is to the effect that Ayoub Ithan is recruiting his force, and is making requisitions upon the inhabitants of the district for supplies and aims, of which he stands in much need. His artillery is reported to be sufficiently strong, and fifteen of the Ameer's cannons, captured at the battle of Karez Illiyiar last month, are, in consequence, being sent to Herat.
August 16. The damage to the English wheat crops by excessive min has been fully confirmed by further reports It is expected that the yield this season will be below the average. In the House of Commons to-day, the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone moved the consideration of the Irish Land Bill, as re-amended in the House of Lords on Friday last, 12ch instant. The Premier, however, in his speech, made no statement to indicate the line of action which the Government intended to follow in dealing with the measure.
.New Yokk, August 15. President Garfield has experienced a severe relapse, and is suffering from vomiting, with feverish symptoms.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, August 16. A private telegram from London reports that a collision has occurred between the barque Clodian, bound from Melbourne (left April 6) to Liverpool with wheat, and the barque Yarmouth. The former vessel sunk, and has become a total loss. Brisbane, August 16. The detached squadron was sighted off Stradbroke Island yesterday morning, and is expected to anchor in the river at 1 p.m. to day. The Right Rev. G. H. Stenton, Bishop of Northern Queensland, is seriously ill ; and is not expected to recover, Sydney, August 15. Three fresh cases of small-pox have been reported to-day—a man named Rogers, a clerk, residing in Pyrmont; a woman named Sarah Poster, cf Clarence street; and .another woman named Molett, living in Harbor street. The patients in each case have been removed to the quarantine station. The case at Surrey Hills has also been qiiiiantined, the doctors having decided that that patieut is suffering from small-pox.
