It is about the best that has been delivered for years, though only half the secrets are disclosed, the Estimates not yet being down ; still, by noting down as you travel, the following conclusions are not far wrong Water woi'ks, goldfields—the contents of the slip of papers already communicated will prove correct—[These were: “Second dam, Kapitea, £3OOO, to be supplemented by £2OOO for widening races, etc.]. The total required for water-races in the Middle Island will be between £23,000 and £23,000 ; but of that amount £BOOO ate now due, leaving for Kumara second reservoir, £3000; Mikonui race, £3000; Otago races, £3000; Argyle race, Charleston, £3OOO. Dillman’s to Christchurch road, £iooo. Okarito roads—Mapourika Lake to the Forks, £3OOO ; roads to open lands for sale at Mapourika Lake, Gillespies, £5000; Waitahi to Haast, £8000; and Matthias Pass track, £BOOO ; Waitaki to Waitangitioni, £I3OO. Grey Harbor works, £15,000; though Hokitika harbor not mentioned. A young man named Scott, aged twenty-two, employed on the Invercargill and Riverton railway, while out shooting a few days ago, had his thumb blown off, the contents of the charge and part of the thumb bone lodging in his shoulder. He lingered till yesterday, when he died, mortification having set in. August 8. An old settler named Thomas Buxton was sent to gaol this morning for contempt of Court, he having loudly exclaimed in the R.M. Court that there was no means of getting a jnst debt re j covered in the colony. He had the option of paying a fine of £3. Robert Arnold, a prisoner, under sentence of eighteen months for cutting and wounding, died in the hospital on Saturday, He had been suffering from congestion of the lungs and heart disease.
