[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Hawera, August 9. A surveyor named Thomas Anderson blew his brains out yesterday with a carbine. He was in charge of the survey at the back of Mokoia, on the Native reserve. He started out with bis party, but when they had gone a | short distance he told his men to go on and he would follow in a few minutes. Deceased then went back to the tent and committed the rash act. The cook cooeyed to the men, who came back, but life was extinct. He came to New Zealand about seven years ago, and was one of the surveyors whom the Natives turned off the Waimate Plains. For a few days before his death deceased was very despondent, and hardly spoke. Generally he was of a lively and pleasant temper, but had to strive against fits of despondency sometimes. He was very much liked by those who knew him.
