London, August 6. A banquet given to Her Majesty’s Ministers by the Liberal party, in re : cognition of the policy carried out by the Government, took place at the Mansion House to-day. In alluding to the state of affairs in Afghanistan, Mr Gladstone stated he deemed any internal meddling in that country would be a blunder, but Government would respect the integrity of Afghanistan. In conclusion, referring to Colonial affairs, Gladstone stated that Ministers would relinquish the name of Englishmen before they would renounce the great duties they felt they possessed in connection with the Colonies, August 7. John Dillon, M.P. for County Tipperary, who was arrested on 2nd May. last under the Irish Coercion Act, and who has been lodged in Kilmainhara Gaol since the date named, was to-dav released from custody. JNew York, August 6. A largely attended meeting was held at Chicago to-day under the auspices of the Irish involution Congress, at which the condition of Ireland and the action of the British Government in connect tiou with that country were discussed in violent and inflammatory language, and the use of firearms and explosives, as a means of redress, was freely commended. It is stated that this Congress is engaged in drawing up a programme for future action, in which dynamite will have a prominent place. Calcutta, August 8. Telegrams are to hand from Afghanistan which announce that the Ameer Abdurrahman is now at Khelat engaged in massing troops from the surrounding country. —«. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Brisbane, August 0. In the libel action brought by Mr Coote, journalist, against the proprietors of the Evangelical Standard, in which damages were laid at £IOOO, a verdict has been returned for defendant. Sydney, August 0. Two fresh cases of small-pox have been reported to-day from Croydon, about five miles to the west of this city. The Board of Health have not yet decided whether the patients (two children named Wyndrom) shall be removed to the quarantine station or left under the care of their parents.
