BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall last evening ; present —His Worship the Mayor (J. O’Hagan, Esq.), Councillors Campbell, Horne, Burger, Pearn, and Pollock.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of, and the inward read and received. On the motion of Cr. Beam, seconded by Cr. Horne, it was agreed that a half year’s subsidy (£l2 10s) be paid to the Benevolent Society, Cr. Pearn moved and Cr. Barger seconded dealt with in the same manner as Henderson’s,” which was to grant the applicant the sum of £3 to assist him in removing his house, &c., from off Cashmere street, which street, he stated, was “ one only in name.” The Mayor moved an amendment, which was seconded by Cr. Campbell—- “ That Thos. Harrold receive an extension of time, fourteen days, to remove his obstructions, and that the Public Works Committee be instructed to visit the ground, and report as to what amount of compensation, if any, he is entitled to.” A division was called for; —Ayes, 2 The Mayor, Cr. Campbell; Noes, 4 Crs. Home, Pollock, Burger, Pearn. A division was then taken on the original motion, which was carried by 4 to 2, the votes being reversed. In reply to a letter from the Honorary Secretary of the Kumara Amateur Dramatic Club, soliciting the patronage of the Mayor, and Borough Council to an entertainment to be given on the 19th August for the benefit of the local Hospital, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Pearn, seconded by Cr. Campbell, that the Council accede to the request. On the motion of Cr. Campbell, seconded by Cr. Pollock, Mr Healey was granted fourteen days’ extra time to remove his obstructions from the North Town Belt. The same allowance of time was

granted to Mr Morris for a similar purpose. 0. Bu rger presented a petition from Messrs Hannan and Muivihill, praying that Tnl st.ieet, from its junction with the Main road, might he gravelled wider for a distance of three chains towards the coach stabling, the sides ot the road being at present so boggy as to make it almostimpos-ible fbrvehicles, especially coaches, to be turned there* the same being injurious to the business of the petitioners. The petition was received* and* on the motion of Cr. Campbell, seconded by Cr. Burger* referred to the Public Works Committee to report to next meeting. The Town Clerk produced a cdpy of the judgment of the Resident Magis* trate re the ousting of Cr. Simmons. The particulars of this appeared in the Kumara Times of the 22nd inst. The Town Clerk laid upon the table specifications prepared by him for improving the Cemetery ; and it was subsequently agreed that tenders be called for in accordance therewith. A report from the Public Works Committee was received and considered. It was as follows : Report. The committee TeCoirtmeiid—=* 1. That the sections north of Seddon street, between Main street and Firststreet, be drained, bit condition of the owners [of adjoining property] paying £1 per section; and that tenders be called for the work. 2. That notice be sent to the owners of sections 95 and 96, in Main street, to fence the frontage of their sections. 3. That the exterior of the Town Hall be painted.

That seven chains of Tui street, from Main street to the second culvert, be repaired under the graveling contract. 5, That specifications be prepared for improving the remainder of Tui street, John S. Pea En. , Clauses 1,2, 3, and 4 were adopted. Regarding clause 5, the Mayor tnoved and Cr. Campbell seconded, pro forma, that after the words “ Tui street” the following words be added—*'also Third street, and that a drain be formed for 3| chains on the south side of Tui street, commencing at Third street and extending eastwards.” ° A division was taken on this amendment; Ayes 3: The, Mayor, Crs, Horne, Pollock ; Noes 3 : Crs. .Campbell, Burger, Pearn ; and carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. The clause as amended was then put and carried. Tile following tenders for improvements to the Recreation Ground were then opened:— Clearing, grubbing, and draining.— P. Keenan, £65; C. -Murtha, £55 : M. Taylor, £49 15s. Fencing.-Jas. Morgan, £99 15a ; Morris and Mnnro, £BO 12s 6d; J. Barrett, £64 15s; C. Murtha, £63! The tenders of M. Taylor, for clearing and grubbing, and C. Murtha for fencing, were accepted. The Council then adjourned.
