With this issue we present our readers with a verbatim report of Sir George Grey’s speech on Local Self-government, delivered in the House of Representatives on the 12th inst., and kindly forwarded to us for distribution.

The Christchurch coaches left the Bealey at the usual hour this morning, and arrived here at 3.15 this afternoon.

The San Francisco mail arrived by the mail coach this' afternoon, and was promptly sorted and delivered. Hurst, Hursthouse, Johnston, Kelly, Kenny, Levin, Mason, M‘Caughari, Murray, Pitt, Richardson, Rollcston, Russell, Saunders, Sutton, Swanson, Trimble, Wakefield, Weston, Whitaker, Whyte, Wright. In reference to a statement made by Mr Seddon to the effect that the Waimea Water-race had been offered to the Westland County Council, who declined to take it over, we (West Coast Times) have been requested by some of the County Councillors to give a denial to the assertion, and at their request we have examined the minute book and find that the statement is devoid of foundation.

The Education Board of the district of Westland advertise for a head-teacher for the Kumara State School. Applications, with certificates, to be sent to the office, Greymouth, on or before Monday, Bth proximo.

We again draw the attention of those parties who by the purchase of a 10s ticket are anxiously waiting to pocket the 50 sovereigns offered by Mr A. Singer, that the culmination of their fortune in this event will transpire without fail on Monday evening next. This is, of course, only one of the 50 prizes announced, the total value of the union being £250, and included are seven superior gold and silver watches, three clocks, pictures, gold and silver lockets, brooches, rings and earrings, nocklaces, and studs. There will be sweepstakes for tickets in the Town Hall this evening. We may mention that this will probably be the last afiair of the kind, as the ct Gaming and Lotteries Bill” now before Parliament will effectually prevent such unions from taking place.

Recovering in great measure from his late severe illness, Mr Henry Burger seems to be making another start in life ; for, adjoining his fancy goods store, he has now opened a shop for the sale of drapery, clothing, &c. ; and, by keeping the best of articles and selling at reasonable prices, he hopes to merit public support in his new line of business.

Messrs Girdwood, Lahman, and Co. will hold a sale of bullocks, sheep and pigs, at the Preston Yards, Greymouth, on Monday next.

A very sudden death took place at Greymouth on Thui-sday night, viz., that of James Archer, who was found lying dead in Murray street. Mr Archer appeared (the Argus states) to be in his usual health when last seen, about two hours before his body was found. He was an old in the Grey district, having been a farmer at Coal Creek Flat for the last 16 years. Some monetary transactions he was brought into through endorsing bills for a friend preyed upon his spirits during the last two years, and this may have assisted in bringing on the disease which at last cut him off so suddenly. Deceased was 55 years of age, and a native of Scotland. At the inquest, which was held yesterday afternoon, Dr. Morice stated that he had held a postmortem examination on the body, and found “the stomach contained about 20 ounces of half-digested food. There was disease of the aorta and aortic valves, which of itself rendered him liable at any time to sudden death. His death may be recorded as of heart disease.” The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. Mr Levestam appears to have had legal as well as legislative duties to perform in Wellington, having been subpoenaed as a witness in the case of Griffiths v. Johnson, in which he deposed as follows :—“ I was in Nelson at the time of Murdoch’s trial and the impression left on my mind was that Griffiths could not be guilty. The letter produced did not point to Griffiths or any particular person. . I could not conceive he was the person pointed out. There were several persons in the bank at the time, and the robbery might have been committed by an outsider. I have no doubt Murdoch was guilty. Griffiths was never suspected. It was said if the Judge had not summed up so strongly against Murdoch, the jury would have found Murdoch guilty. The applause following the verdict was owing to the people being pleased to have a slap at the Judge.”

The Wellington correspondent of the New Plymouth daily says Judging from the length of the Order Paper, which now approaches six feet in length, there is but a remote chance of “ political rest” this session. Bills keep tumbling in, both Government and private, faster than the old ones are despatched.” •» It is stated that the Mosgiel Woollen Company have secured an order from a Melbourne house for about £60,000 worth of their goods. This is the first result of competition at the Melbourne Exhibition. 1

A sensation has been caused among European astronomers by the unannounced appearance in the north-western heavens of a large comet. It is a stranger, and it is said to be its first appearance. A race in lap-streak boats has been arranged between Wise, of Riverside, and Edward Hanlan, to cone off in the middle of July, for 1000 dollars a side. The course is five miles, in Toronto-Bay, with a turn.

A contagious malady like leprosy has appeared in Toulouse, in France. Trickett, the oarsman, arrived in New York on June 11th, witli Kelly, his trainer. He expects to remain in the United States three or four months, and offers to row any man in a race except Hanlan.

At the Ottawa Regatta, at which over 12,000 persons were present, Hanlan, the champion, who acted as umpire, was accorded a tremendous ovation. He was presented with a gold watch and chain in honor of his recent victories. One of the pews in Dr. John Hall’s church, New York, was recently sold for £O4O.

A London telegram states that another claimant to the Tichborne estates, representing himself as the real Sir Roger, has been discovered near San Francisco, and that it is his intention to proceed to England to prosecute his claim.
