The Ulemas (the clergy and chief legal functionaries) having refused to confirm the sentence of death passed upon the murderers of the Sultan, Abdul Aziz, and Turkish Ministers having moreover urged the Sultan to commute the sentence, Midhat Pasha, and the others found guilty of the crime, have been transported to Arabia, where they will be detained in exile. Capetown, July 28. News to hand from Pretoria states that the trial of several Boers arrested for the murder of Mr Malcolm during the war resulted in their acquittal. The jury was composed of Boers. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, July 29. Parliament resumed yesterday. It announced that David Gaunson has resigned his portfolio as Minister of Lands. It was further announced that prorogation will take place on Wednesday, and a new session will commence on Friday next.
Further private telegrams have been received from Calais, announcing that the ship Republic, which went ashore near that port on Wednesday last, has since been floated off and towed into harbor. She has been docked for ’examination and repairs. The Union Company’s steamship Hero has arrived from New Zealand. Sydney, July 29. Nothing definite has transpired with regard to the movements of the squadron, but it is now said to be uncertain whether it will at all visit Auckland. The Admiral is known to be awaiting further instructions from the Admiralty,
