The Christchurch coaches left the Bealey this morning at the usual early hour, and arrived here both at about 3 o’clock. We acknowledge receipt of Nos. 5,0, hud 7 Hansard) also several parliamentary papers. Mr A. R. Petrie won the chess match with Mr R. Cross, of Hokitika, the score being Petrie 4, Cross 2. Recently at the club-room of the Canterbury Chess Club, Mr Jacobsen played six games simultaneously ; he won three, lost two, and drew one.
After spending a few days at Hokitika, for a change, the Rev. Mr Scott returned to Kumava on Wednesday last. We are pleased to learn that the reverend gentleman is gradually regaining his wonted strength, and we observe that he will conduct divine service in Holy Trinity Church to-morrow, morning and evening. Late letters by the San Francisco mail announce that the Rev. Dr. Moran, of Dunedin, had, after experiencing a most agreeable voyage, arrived in that city, and was about leaving for New York.
At a meeting of the Westland County Council on Wednesday last, letters were received —From the Secretary of the Knmara Hospital, applying for the promised subsidy of £SO. Received, amount to be paid as soon as the money is available, to all the Hospitals.—From Mr P. Dungan, requesting, on behalf of a public meeting, that the sum of £5 be granted towards the expenses of a petition to be sent to the House of Representatives for water-supply to the Kumara. Received, and request granted on the motion of Mr M ‘ Whir ter. From Messrs M‘Kenzie and Co., asking for extension of time for works at Goldsborough. Referred to the Inspector of Works.—From Messrs M'Oonnon, asking that a portion of No. 2 contract of the Dillman’s Town road be completed first. Held over for consideration when tenders ai’e opened. It is publicly notified in the Government Gazette that the Arahura Road Board was, on the 11th May, 1881, dissolved, and the Road District merged into the County of Westland by special order of the County Council. In the House of Representatives on Thursday, in reply to a question, it was stated that Government did not intend appointing an inspector of mines for the West Coast of the Middle Island, but existing inspection would be made more efficient, and be extended to gold-miners. In reply to Mr Weston, Government in the House, said that an overland mail service between Nelson and Reefton will be established.
Fillip! Brugelli sustained a severe fracture of the leg in the Croesus Company’s mine, Reefton, on Wednesday last, by a piece of quartz from the roof falling on him and breaking his leg near the ankle. Much Sympathy is felt for the unfortunate man, as he has only recently recovered from a similar Accident in the United Alpine Company’s Mine. The Welcome Company crushed ninety tons of stone last week or about their usual average, and obtained the splendid yield of 6620z5. amalgam. Notice is given in the Gazette that the gold-mining lease applied for by A. D. Bayfield, for Foreigner Company—namely, IC4 acres, at Lankey’s Creek, Inangahua—has been refused ; and the ground is now open to pei’sons holding miners’ rights or business licenses as if a lease of the said ground had not been applied for. The Wellington correspondent of the Auckland Star says : —There is a probability that the question of moving the seat of Government may again come up this session. There is a strong party favorable to it, and there is no doubt the feeling has been growing stronger during the last three years on the part of Southerners to have the capital removed to Christchurch.
The Nelson Colonist has bern informed that a party of diggers at the Wakamarina had found a nugget of gold, mixed with some quartz, which was so weighty that one man could only move it with difficulty. It is unable to vouch for the statement, but the particulars were related with minuteness. The names of the fortunate men, it was stated are Messrs Bray, Gasson, and Rowbottoin, all Nelson men. But a telegram dated Nelson, July 11, states “ The report that a large nugget had been found at Wakamarina is denied. The Colonist warns diggers that the new ground at these diggings is of small extent, and little is now being done on account of cold and wet.”
The body of a man was found last Saturday on the hillside just above the road leading from Lyttelton to Sumner. It appears (says the Christchurch Press) that three youths were out hunting in the clump of bush, when one of them espied the body lying at the foot of a tree. They at once made for the police office, and gave information as above. From the appearace of the corpse, it must have been lying there for a considerable time, probably three or four weeks. The deceased was attired in moleskin trousers, Crimean shirt, blue diagonal vest, laced boots, and grey socks. There was no coat nor hat. In the pockets of the trousers were found three pearl buttons and a farthing; nothing by which deceased could be identified, and so far no one who has seen the body has been able to recognise it. The decaascd was probably about thirty years of age, about five feet two inches or a little more, bread built, had a little beard sandy colour and brown hair. As far as could bo noticed no marks of violence were found on the body, and up to the present who the man was or how he came by his death are a mystery. London has a woman jockey. No horse is so vicious that she hesitates to mount him. She is described as virtuous, intelligent, and womanly.
