The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 1881.

To-day we devote a considerable portion of our space to a description of the works undertaken and still being carried on by the Long*tunnel Company, who are now, we trust, on the eve of reaping the reward of three years of indomitable energy and perseverence displayed in grappling with the difficulties and dangers which have to be encountered in mining for gold on this Coast. For the most of these particulars we are indebted to one of the members of the company, to whose exertions the company owe much of their success. It is to be hoped that the present Government will see by this what experienced miners are disposed to do, if, when all their labor is accomplished, they can only be supplied with water sufficient to consummate their purpose. There is room—payable ground enough—we are told over and over again, for scores of such companies on this goldfield. And if the result of the first washing be as satisfactory as it is expected, no doubt capitalists will be induced to come forward to work other portions of this extensive field. Meanwhile, a paternal Government should not .despise the humbler miners, who are equally energetic and resolute though necessarily in a more circumscribed way than their wealthier neighbours, by limiting the supply of water to work their various claims. How many idle days and hours have had to be passed through a scarcity of this most useful of elements, it is painful to think of, let alone write about. We sincerely hope the Government will, in conformity with the very numerously signed petition which is now before the House, this session provide means for an increased supply of water to this goldfield.
