MR GEORGE KING.

We have been shown a letter from Mr George King, some time ago a resident of Kumara and during his sojourn here captain of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, who, it will be remembered, became afflicted with blindness and for whose benefit and relief an entertainment was got up in this town to help him to proceed to Melbourne to obtain advice, and, if possible, a cure or relief. Mr King proceeded to Melbourne with this object ; and, although we regret to say, the operations he has undergone to restore his Bight have not been attended with success, he contrives to find his way about the city and suburbs, but only by artificial assistance, and having

learned the blind alphabet. Mr King desires to acknowledge the liberality of the people of this district for the handsome sum presented to him, and we cannot do better, perhaps, than publish the letter in fall. It is addressed to Mr Skilton, who acted as honorary secretary to the Entertainment Committee : To Mr Skilton. Sir—l duly received your letter of the 25th May, 1881, informing me that your committee had forwarded a draft to my credit through the Bank of New Zealand for the sum of £5116s 2d, which I duly received through the Agency of the said Bank in Melbourne. I beg to return my sincere thanks to the Committee and to the public of Kumara at large for their generous liberality to me under my present affliction. Trusting I shall ever remember your kindness with filial recollections—my heart seems to flow with gratitude for your kind remembrance of me.

Believe me to remain, Yours ever sincerely, George King. Richmond, Melbourne, June 26, 1881.
