Nelson, June 28. By the explosion of a kerosene lamp, a seven-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr Jago, was destroyed last night. Policies in the Liverpool and London offices existed on the house for £2OO, and on the furniture, jewellerv, &c., for £4OO ; and, in addition to these, Jago’s son, a jeweller, held a policy over his working tools, jewels, &c., for £IOO. The loss in neither case is fully covered. Fears are entertained for the safety of the schooner Dido, belonging to Levien, of this port. She left Lyttelton on the 10th inst., for Waitapn, and has not since been heard of.
Palmerston North, June 28. The libel case Dungan (editor of the Manawatu Times), v, M'Minu (editor of the Manawatu Standard), was to come off to-day. By mutual consent both cases were withdrawn. Auckland, June 27. Colloric, the telegraphist, has been sent to the Lunatic Asylum. A Chinaman has been found in a cave in a state of lunacy, near Onehunga. He has been missed by his countrymen for some time and was thought by them to be murdered, June 28. Samuel Thonelly, carter, was killed at Mount Eden gravel pits by a fall of earth. He leaves a wife and family. Henry Pancourt, a quarantined passenger by the outward mail steamer, died at the quarantine station of dysentery. Wellington, June 27. Joseph Ballinger, plumber, died suddenly to-day. He was riding in the (ram when he was seized with a fit and expired. He was GO years of age.
