THE IRISH NATIONAL LAND LEAGUE.
A meeting was held in St. Patrick's School-room, on Sunday last, for the purpose of expressing sympathy with the struggle made by the Irish people against landlord tyranny j and to form a Branch of the Irish National Land League in this district. At 4 o'clock p.m. some forty men were present, but there were double that number when the business commenced. Mr P. Tanaey was voted to the chair, and Mr Duggan was appointed Secretary. The Chairman thanked them for the honor conferred upon him. He said that it required no words of his to recommend the tenets of the Irish National Land League to those present, since that League sought, by strictly constitutional means, to remove the load of oppression that weighed heavily
on their kindred in Ireland. The Irish National Land League endeavored to remove a grievance that had made the Irish tenant farmer a victim to periodic famine, whereby he was forced to appeal to the charity of strangers, while the fruit of his labour went to pay the exorbitant demand of the landlord. Mr M. J. Maloney proposed the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr 3. Oarew-, and carried unanimously : " That in the opinion of this meeting it is most desirable that we give expression to our heartfelt sympathy with the Irish people in their struggle against oppression, by forming a Branch of the Irish National Land League in this district. Mr T. Carey proposed the second resolution"'.—" That the names of those present, who are desirous of becoming members of the Kumara Branch of the Irish National Laud League, be now taken down."—Seconded by Mr E. Clark and carried. The names and contributions of seventy-four members were then received. The next resolution, proposed by Mr Gilbßrt and seconded by Mr Corrigan-, *' That a Committee of Management consisting of a President, Vice-Presi-dent, two Treasurers, a Secretary and twelve members be appointed," was agreed to. Mr Jeremiah Gilbert was then formally elected President ; and Mr Duggan Secretary. Messrs Kille6n and Tausey were elected joint Treasurers; and Mr M. J. Maloney Vice-President. It was resolved that the term of office of each Committee shall cease at the expiration of six nionths commencing from the Ist ihst. The Secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps to provide rales fdr the guidance of the Managing Committee. A unanimous vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business.
