[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wanganul, May 2. A man named Thomas Cargill, a farm laborer, was run over and killed at Kai Iwi by the northern tram on Saturday night. It is not known whether the man tfas walking on the line or had lain down, the accident not being discovered until the driver happened to notice something dragging on the engine. TiilAru, May 1 An inquiry -will be held to-morrow re the wreck of the schooner Amaranth, The insurance on the hull is still unascertainable. There was none on the cargo or freight.
A man named Ojuirk tried to commit suicide in the Domain to-day byhanging himself. This failing, he stabbed himself in the abdomen, and now he is in a precarious state. At the inquest to-day on the mati who met his death by falling off the southern train on Saturday, a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. There was not sufficient evidence to prove the identification. Deceased is supposed to be William Oregan, alias " Brockley Bill." Wellington, May 3. The San Francisco mail steamer, on arrival at Auckland yesterday afternoon, was placed in quarantine, measles having broken out during the voyage, and two mild cases still being under treatment.
The Rev, Wm. Cruden died during the passage from dysentery and general debility.
The New Zealand passengers had to be quarantined, but when the mails have been fumigated, they will be landed.
The Southern mails will be despatched from Auckland to-morrow.
At the inquest on the body of Richard Kirwan, found drowned in the harbor, a verdict of " Accidental death" was returned, and a rider added that the breast-work should be protected.
Dunedin, May 3
It has transpired that amongst those who went on board the Tararua, but did not book, were Mrs H. Roseufeldt and four children. She was going to rejoin her husband in Melbonrne. Very faint hopes are entertained of the recovery of Young Garrett, who was seriously injured in the Roslyn Tramway accident. Another accident took place on the Roslyn Railway this morning. The sand-boxes would not act, and a carriage came down at a terrific pace ; but the brakes lifted the wheels of the car off the rails. Munro, the conductor, and an engineer were slightly hurt. Christchurch, May 3. Two lads named Ellis and Campbell were out shooting yesterday, near Bottle Lake. The latter was walking ahead, when Ellis's gun exploded and shot the other through, the left side and arm. He was taken to the Hospital, and now lies in a precarious state.
