THE TARARUA DISASTER.—PILLAGING WRECKAGE.
Invercargill, May 2. . The pillage of wreckage is going on to a disgraceful extent. The police are how arriving to prevent it.
People at Fortrose say that had a a telegraph station been there, the whole disaster might have been prevented.
The Rev. Mr Waterhouse was cool and calm.
The body of a girl, supposed to be Miss Kelly, of Auckland, has been washed ashore.- Advice has just been received of the body of another man being washed ashore. Dunedin, May 2. The Star correspondent telegraphs: “ The reef is not Waipapapa. The Waipapapa reef is said to be four miles to the eastward. The Tararua went on Otara reef, which is unlike Waipapapa, and onlyextends two miles out. The wonder is how- the Tararua could have escaped striking on Waipapapa, seeing that she was so far in shore. The wrecking that has been going on is something shocking. As fast as trunks, &c., came ashore, they were rifled. The eight or ten in number, are now on the ground, and will prevent it. The Volunteer Committee from Invercargill can do no good, but feel disinclined to go back without seeing for themselves how matters stand. On the body of a man named Martin were found 19 sovereigns. The second mate explains that the reason why he stood at sea was to be ready to help to land the passengers if the sea got calm, as there was no other boat available. The passengers saved all agree that were a number of people on the Tararua who had not booked at the office, hue who intended to pay on board. It is therefore impossible to get at the exact number of those on board ; but taking the lowest possible calculation there must have been 100 drowned ; while some fix the number at 125. It is thought there were close on seventy in the steerage.” A magisterial, inquiry into the loss of the Tararua was held on Thursday. WRECK OF THE AMARANTH. Greymouth, May 2. A telegram was received by Messrs Kennedy Bros, to-day, stating that the Amaranth had gone ashore about six miles north of Tirnaru. The telegram also stated that the Amaranth was loaded ; but whether the cargo was outward or inward the telegram did not specify. Timaru, May 2. The schooner Amaranth, which stranded on Saturday, was owned by Guthrie and Larnach. The vessel and cargo were valued at £IOOO.
