BRITISH AND FOREIGN,
London, April 30. There has been an alarming increase in small-pox cases in London of late, and a great many deaths have .recently occurred from that disease, while a number of persons are now stricken down with it. The disease is now considered to have become epidemic.
Her Majesty the Queen paid a visit to-daj to ftnghenden Manor, the residence of the late Earl Beaconsfield, and viewed his Lordship’s grave. The Radical members of the House of Commons are strongly opposed to tire proposal to be made shortly by the Premier that funds be voted for the erection of a monument to the late Earl Beaconsfield in Westminster Abbey.
A second sculling match took place to-day between Edward Trickett and an oarsman named Kirby, resulting in another easy victory for Trickett. Capetown, April 30. News hts been received from Basutoland that the mediation of Sir Hercules Robinson, with the view of bringing about a settlement of the difficulties in that country, has been successful. The Basnto chiefs have now agreed to the proposals for peace which were submitted by His Excellency, and hostilities between the Cape forces, and the Basutos have now finally ceased.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Melbourne, April 28. The Victorian census return taken on the night of the 3rd insfc., gives the population of Melbourne and its environs as 252,000 ; Sandhurst, 35,000 ; Ballarat, 43,000 ; and Geelong, 13,000.
May 1. Wallace, the purser of the steamer India, has been arrested at Wodonga, and Wright, the captain, was arrested last night in Melbourne while in a state of intoxication.
May 2, The news of the. disaster to the Tararua has caused a great and painful sensation here.
The Exhibition was closed on Saturday evening. The total admissions were 1,485,000.
