RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Tuesday, April 26. [Before H. A. Stratford, Esq., R.M.] OBSCENE LANGUAGE.
Ellen Stewart was charged, on the information of her husband, with having used obscene language towards him in a public place on the 3rd April. The evidence of the informant went to show that his wife had tried to break in his door with an axe, and had used language of a very bad description. A man named Curtis, corroborated the evidence of the witness. The defendant made a rambling statement to the Court about a leg of pork, two heads of cabbage, chairs, pictures, bruises and ill-treatment, and concluded by asking protection against her husband.
His Worship said she would bo fined I Os, or in default of payment, she would be “ protected” in the Hokitika Uaol for seven days.
ASSAULT, Robert Stewart was charged with having assaulted his wife, Elleii Stewart. The plaintiff gaVe evidence to the effect that she had seised her husband by the beard, and that he had trampled on her feet, and beaten her. On plaintiff being asked if she had any witnesses to call, she Said she would call “ the whole street.’ 1 Sergeant Emmerson deposed as to what he saw and heard of the disturbance. The case was finally dismissed. CIVIL CASES. Falvey v. Macrowfield : a claim fat 15s. —There was no appearance of defendant, and judgraeUt was given foC the amount claimed, with costs. M‘Glone v. Williams l a claim for £5 3s.—Defendant admitted the liability, and judgment was given by consent for the amount claimed. The Court then adjourned.
