Hobbs and Goodwin have been summoned under the Vagrant Act for gambling with the totalisator. The summons does not disclose the name of the prosecutor. The case will be heard on Monday. Auckland, April 22. Thomas Fidgett, sentenced for incendiarism several sessions ago, died suddenly in gaol. He was also known to have been a lieutenant of the Royal Navy. Three police cases against publicans for breaches of the Licensing Act broke down.
The Tararna brought a number of Chinese, described as miners, from Sydney for Auckland. Wickham, proprietor of the Free Lance, has been committed for trial on a charge of libel against Hurst, M.H.R. for City West. Bail allowed—himself £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each. Wellington, April 22. There is a probability of a water famine in Wellington, the water in the reservoir having fallen to the extraordinary low depth of 12ft. 9in. The Duke of Manchester starts on a tour through the Manawatu district tomorrow. The prospects of the West Coast railway (North Island) continue favorable.
