[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, April 20. Instructions have been issued to the Deputy Property Tax Commissioners throughout the Colony to take proceedings against defaulters. The Long Brothers, who, it is alleged, intended absconding from tlieir creditors at Picton, were brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, and remanded to Picton. Palmerston North, April 20. Joseph Hall and Christina Goodwin, for the murder of her infant, were committed for trial at the sittings of the Supreme Court at Wanganui, which takes place on Monday. Bulls, April 20. A serious fire occurred here this morning about nine o’clock, resulting in the total destruction of a six-roomed cottage belonging to a man named Knight. The origin of the fire is unknown at present. The house was insured, though not to its full value. Auckland, April 20. William Fisher, intoxicated, fell over the wharf at midnight, and was rescued by an islander, on the Sovereign, though the rescuer had his arm in a sling. THE BRIG WILD WAYS IN DISTRESS. Auckland, April 20. The Tararna, Captain Garrard, left Sydney at 9 p.tn., April 14th, and experienced light fresh variable winds and fine weather. Arrived at Russell at 6 a.m. on Sunday, the 17th inst. At 3 p.m, on the 19th, off Saperth Bay, North Cape, ran down to the brig Wild Wave, of Sydney. In answer to
signals hailed her and found her under a, jury rudder and short of water. Sent a boat and Captain Harley came on board, and reported having left Kaipara on Thursday, 14th iust,, bound for Melbourne. The wind died away when on the bar, and the ship became unmanageable and drifted on ‘ the North Spit, the sea making a clear breach over her, sweeping deck of everythingTnoveable, water tanks, etc., and stove in the boats. She drifted over spit, carry* ing away the rudder. After getting clear, rigged a jury rudder with the main boom and part of deck cargo. The vessel was manageable, requiring no assistance, but wanting water j is making for the Bay of Islands or Auck* land. Supplied him With water, and at 6 p.m. was proceeding to Russell-.
