BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 19. A bulletin published this morning with reference to Earl Beaconsfield’s death states that after the severe relapse which His Lordship suffered during the night, he sank rapidly, and breathed his last at half-past four this morning. The attendants state that His Lordship passed away without much pain, and as peacefully as if sleeping. News of Earl Beaconsfield’s death has been received with universal sorrow and regret throughout the country. The usual Easter review was held to-day, at Brighton. Twentyfive thousand Volunteers took part in the proceedings. Rome, April 18. Signor Caivoli and his colleagues have withdrawn their resignation, which they tendered in consequence of an adverse vote of the Chamber of Deputies, and have again resumed the Government of this country.
[SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE PAPERS.] London, April 4. The Island of Kino in the Greek Archipelago, was visited by a terrible earthquake, destructive alike to life and property. The killed and injured number no less than 300. Great sympathy has been evoked at the terrible calamity which has befallen the people. The British Government have instructed a portion of the Mediterranean fleet to proceed to the Island for the purpose of rendering assistance to the survivors, and relieving their immediate necessities. The will of the late Thomas Carlyle, the well known author, has been proved, the personal property sworn to being £35,000. , April 7. The Tichborne case has again been brought before the public. The solicitor for the Claimant is engaged collecting evidence for the purpose of submitting the whole case to Parliament, asking the intervention on the ground that new facts have since been brought to light. April 8, The annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge took place this morning on the Thames, over the usual course from Putney to Mortlake. The weather was fine, with warm sunshine, and the water was smooth. There was a large attendance on the river banks and in the accompanying steamers. The betting at the start was 3 to 1 on Oxford. The Oxford Crew won the toss, and selected the Middlesex side of the rivei\ They went ahead at first, rowing an even steady stroke. It was a good race for a mile. The Oxford crew led to Hammersmith Bridge, and were well in front at Barnes, They won easily by four lengths. Time, 21 min. 56sec. Adverse winds are delaying the arrival of wool ships from Australia now due. April 11. It is reported that the Greeks have refused the offer of the European Powers to negotiate with Turkey for the settlement of Greece’s claims. The death is announced of Prince Pierre Napoleon Bonaparte, the third son of Lucien Bonaparte, the nephew of Napoleon 1., 65 years of age. Mr Parnell, in the course of a speech on the new Irish Bill introduced by ihe Government, said that in two years he would give free laud, and the right to Irishmen to make the laws of their own country, LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, April 20. The report of the Australian Mutual Provident Society for the last year has been issued. It shows that 9623 proposals for life assurance were submitted during the year, 6551 being accepted and completed, assuring £2,181,258. The new premiums amount to £74,666. Claims have arisen on 261 policies, amounting to £111,413. The accumulated funds of the Society now amount to £3,379,510, being an increase of £445,713 compared with the previous year.
