BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 11. The Homeward Australian mails via Brindisi were delivered here to-day. Capetown, April 11. News has been received from the Transvaal that the Boers have admitted that the surrender of the British garri-son-at Potchemstroom, on the day on which peace was signed, was brought about by treachery on the part of the attackers, and the surrender has accordingly been rescinded. Paris, April 11. The Chamber of Deputies to-day passed a vote of confidence in the French Ministry. ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, April 12. A grand naval review of the Australian squadron under the command of Commodore Wilson took place at Port Jackson to day. , The forces engaged included 10 warships carrying 50 guns,: 1500 men, including 300 men of the New South Wales Naval Brigade. The review was followed by a sham fight, in which H. M. ships Wolverine, Miranda, and Cormorant, made a combined attack upon the the point south of Firm Cove (known as Lady Macquarrie’s chair which was defended by : a force of of 1500 men, with 11 pieces of artillery and three Gatling guns,; under the protection of an earthwork! which had been thrown up. Large crowds assembled to witness the manoeuvres. The demonstration was a complete success, and passed off with great eclat. The defenders of Lady Macquan ie’s chair were supported by Her Majesty’s ship Alert, and the schooners Alacrity, Beagle, Conflict, Reynard, and Sandfly. The Wallsend Company, of Newcastle, have reduced its price to 7s per ton for best coal. Samples of Boorook silver ore have been assayed in London at 17, 13-16, and 41|= sterling, respectively, per ton. The news have caused some excitement in the Colony.
