The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 1881.

It is scarcely necessary for us to remind our readers and the public of the grand entertainment to take place to-night, at the Adelphi Theatre, for the benefit of the Kumara Hospital, which is being so kindly given by the clever Comedy and Burlesque Company now in our midst. Those who have not heard the favorite character drama of “Struck Oil” will feel satisfied for their outlay in hearing it; and when to this is added a musical melange, in which the full strength of the company will appear, we have no hesitation in saying that those who go will come away highly delighted. There is nothing fresh to report from the rush at the rear of Mr Biggs’, Revel! Terrace, Greenstone. Three claims only are on payable gold, and from these there appears to be no trace of the lead. But some indefatigable men, we learn, of whom Isbister and party are among the number, are resolved on devoting some weeks’ labor to discover traces of the run. On Friday next (Good Friday) a match will be fired on the Kumara rifle range by ten men each of the First Westland (Hokitika) Rifles, the Greymouth Rifle Rangers, and the Kumara Local Contingent •; 200, 400, and 500 yards ; seven shots at each range. Each company -will contribute £5, which amount will be distributed in prizes to the highest aggregate scorers. The sitting of the Court of A.ppeal of New Zealand will be held at the Courthouse, Wellington, on the 9th May. The fourteenth competition for the gold challenge medal given by ladies of Kumara took place at the rifle butts on Friday and Saturday last, and resulted in Private Green winning it for the first time. This medal has to be won twice in succession or three times altogether to become the absolute property of the winner. Private Upham is the only Volunteer who has won it twice, it being won by different men on each of the other twelve competitions. The following are the last scores ; GOLD MEDAL. On Friday next the following Volunteers are required to parade, in uniform, at 9 o’clock in the morning, to meet the Hokitika and Greymouth teams : Sergeants Smith and Davies, Corporal Sampson, Volunteers Stennard, Coutts, Keller, Simmons, Thorne, Marshall, and Robinson. The annual ball under the auspices of the Greenstone Branch of the Hibernian Society will be held at the Adelphi Hall, on Monday next (Easter Monday), the 18th. The persons appointed for carrying out the arrangements are sparing neither time nor trouble to make the affair a success ; excellent music has been provided, the catering is in skilful hands, and the Hall will be specially decorated for the occasion. Tickets, we see, are to be obtained at the principal hotels in Kumara and Dillman’s Town, or of any of the officers of the society. The following are the acceptances for the Hokitika Handicap, to be run on Easter Monday York, The Field, Greyhound, Elfin King, Whalebone, Native and Warrigal. The entries for the Trial Stakes, weight for age, are—York, Tout, and Hero ; for the Ladies Purse—York, Hero, Native, and Kensington. The Club have arranged for a Hurdle Race on the second day. To those in search of merriment, visit S. S. Pollock’s, and obtain the great Irish song “The Babies in our Block,” or

“Little Sally Waters”; price sixpence. [Advt.] For list of prizes in a grand art-union at Hokitika see fourth page.— [Advt.]
