PHELAN RELIEF FUND.

A incepting of the Phelan Relief committee was held at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening last; present—Messrs Blake (in the chair). Pearn Gow, M'Kenzie, Barrowman, Moran, Kiely, O’Connell, Broidy, Clarke, Maher, Boheu, Maivihill, Seddon, Munyard, Fraser, and Duggan. ■ '

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary read a statement showing that the gross refceipts amounted to £669, 14s 6d. The statement as read \Vas adopted. Mr Maher requested that the sum of £23 paid by him on behalf of the orphans of John Phelan and Oh behalf of Mrs D. Phelan be placed to the credit of the general fund* as a further donation. The offer of Mr Maher was accepted with thauks which brought the amount of the fund up to £692 15s 6d. It was resolved that Mr Perkins be instructed to prepare a deed of trust; embodying the decision of the commit--tee as to how the proportion of the fund for Mrs D. Phelan and the orphans of Mr John Phelan be invested; and that the names of Messrs Blake, Maher, and Moran be inserted therein as trustees. It was also resolved that the charge for preparing the deed of trust bo paid from Mrs I). Phelan’s and the orphans’ portion of the fund. The following accounts were passed for payment:—Secretary, for stationery, stamps, <fec., £4 2s 9d j Kumara Times £5 6s 6d ; Mrs M'Mahon, maintenance of orphans, £26 lOsj Expenses of conveying orphans to Nelson, £7 j W. Kirkpatrick, drapery, £lO 14a 6d j and W. Davidson, do, 8s 6d. The report of sub-committee, stating that they had been negotiating for the purchase of Mr Moses premises for the sum of £SO, as a business place for Mrs D. Phelan was approved of, and the completion of the purchase left in the hands of the trustees. _ A hearty vote of thanks tfas carried unanimously to Mr. Duggan, the Honorary Secretary, for the very satisfactory manner in which he had conducted the business of the committee. Votes of thanks to the Treasurers (Messrs Blake and Maher), and also to the Chairman closed the proceedings, and the committee adjourned sine die.
