BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 18. At the wool sales to-day 8500 bales were offered. The tone of the market was firm. There have been large withdrawals of gold from the Bank of England for North America. March 19. The authorities at the Admiralty have decided to revive the limited competition examination for naval cadets. Four positions will be reserved for candidates from the Colonies. In the House of Commons the consideration of Supply is receiving rapid progress, as the Irish members are abstaining from any further obstruction. Capetown, March 18. Intelligence has beeu received from Natal that the armistice between the Boers and the British in the Transvaal has been prolonged to Monday, the 21st. Constantinople, March 18. It has transpired that the Ambassadors of the Powers have now made a proposal to Turkey and Greece that the latter should accept the Porte's offer of October last to cede the districts of Thessaly and Epirus to the south of Janina and Lavissa ; but the Powers furthermore suggest that the Island of Crete should also at the same time be sin-rendered to Greece. Paris, March 19. It is announced that a new French loan of one milliard francs (forty million pounds stg.) will shortly be raised. The minimum price will be thirty francs in gold. In a public circular announcing the issue of the loan, the Minister of Finance refers to the foreign relations of Frauce. These, he says, continue to be of a friendly character, the pacific -policy of the Government in external affairs having been fully developed. Referring to the intentions of the Government in regard to the loan, he announces that the same will be solely devoted to the development of the internal resources of France. —♦- LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, March 19. The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and the Fifteen of Victoria was resumed to-day. The Fifteen were all disposed of in their second innings for 296 runs, M'Shane contributing 64, and Kelly and Alfen 41 each. The Australians require 248 runs to make in their second inuings to win the match. March 21. The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and Fifteen of Victoria was concluded to-day. The former were all disposed of in their second innings far 176, Groube being not out for 64, and Jarvis caught for 42. The Fifteen' thus won the match by 71 runs. The P. and O. Company's s.s. Cathay has arrived with the Suez mail.
