GREYMOUTH JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN RACES.

The Greymonth races which were postponed from Sfc. Patrick's Day iu consequence of the inclemency of the weather, came off yesterday, and, so far as sport and weather was concerned, left nothing to be desired. The Grey River Argns gives the following account of the various races : Trial Stakes—Of 20 sovs; 1£ miles ; entrance, 1 sov ; winner of £4O to carry 51b extra, of £SO 71b extra, of £IOO and over, to carry 141 b extra ; weight for age, Mr Barry's gr c Greyhound, 3 yrs, 7st 101 b ... 1 Mr Clarke's b g Kensington, aged, 9st 41b 2 Mr S. Osborne's ch g The Tout, 5 yrs, 9st4lb ... 3 Mr J. Brimble's ch g Kumara, aged, 9st4lb ... 0 A good start was effected by Mr Jones, The Tout jumping off with the lead, which he held for the first mile, Kensington being second and the grey third. At the turn they were all together, when a pretty race ensued, and the grey and the bay ran up to the chesnut, but the grey took the lead and kept it. Kensington was under the whip, but would not respond, and the grey won comparatively easy by a length. Greymouth Jockey Club Handicap.— Of 120 sovs ; 2 miles. Mr Barry's ch h Hero, 6 yrs, Bst 71b 1 Mr S. Osborne's ch h York, 5 yrs, lOst 71b 2 Mr J. Brimble's b g Whalebone, 6 yrs 7st 21b 3 Mr J. Jones' b g Warrigal, 6 yrs, 7st 0 Mr J. York soon showed its nose well in front with the King of the Elfins in close attendance, and in this way they raced for about a mile and a-half, the other Blenheim representative, Hero, being well up. On coming round the stand for the last time Hero crept up and collared York, and in this position the two cracks raced to the turn, when just before coming into the straight, the weight began to tell on the son of Traducer, and Hero got his head in front, both horses being under whip. Ultimately Hero won a grand race a length—the finish being an exceedingly pretty one. The amount of > money in the totalisator was £08; the number of backers of Hero was 17.

Handicap Hurdle Race.—Of 25 sovs ; 2 miles. Mr J. Brimble's b f Whalebone, aged, lOstllb .., ..: ... ... i Mr Barton's blk g The Bat, aged, Bst 121 b ... ... 3 Mr Clarke's b g Kensington, aged, 9st 131 b ; .. 4 ... 3 This race, with one exception, that of Whalebone, was a chapter of accidents. In the first place the start was not a good one, The Tout getting away last, and. the Bat having a strong lead, with Whalebone second aud Tandsticker third, Kensington fourth. In endeavouring to negotiate the third hurdle Tout fell; which example was afterwards followed by Tandsticket throwing Sprightly, fortunately without injuring him. The Bat and Kensington refused the hurdles, and had to be put at them a second time, Whalebone, which was well ridden, coming in first. Hacb: Race—Of 15 sovs j mile heats. Mr Brimble's ch g Kuinara, aged ... 1 Mr Jones's b g Butcher Boy, 5 yrs ... 2 Redan, Rival, Diomedes, Hard Times, Sandfly Jim, and Tommy also started. This race excited a good deal of interest and the merits of the various hacks were loudly discussed, Butcher Boy and Kumara being most favored, The first heat was won by Butcher Boy, Kumara second, Redan third. The second heat found Kumara in the premier position, with Sandfly Jim second, and Tommy third* The deciding heat was won easily by Kumara, after a pretty race with Butchef Boy. A capital race then ensued between the grey colt and Whalebone when the former having the most in him won. The races throughout were certainly some of the best we have seen on the Greymouth racecourse, every event being fairly and'honestly contested, and the arrangements giving entire satisfaction* The following horses were entered for this day's racing :— <■"• Goldflelds Handicap,—Warrigal, York, Hero.
