The heaviest rainfall that has ever occurred in this town took place last night, as at 8 o’clock the fall was registered at 4.05 inches, and at noon to-day it had increased to 7.60. The down coach for Hokitika, which left here this morning, had not arrived at its destination at 2 p.m. or the upward mail coach from that town here, at 4.30 o’clock. It is supposed that a heavy landslip on the road between the towns is the cause of the delay. The Rev. John Smith, of Hokitika, will preach in the Wesleyan Church tomorrow evening, prior to his departure; from Westland, as he leaves for Pahner-I ston North early next month. ( On Monday, at the Theatre Royal, the Court Minstrels will make their first ap- 1 pearance before a Kumara audience. ■ This troupe has been very highly spoken; of by the press generally in all the towns' they had appeared, and should not fail to; attract a good house. * The officer in command of the local Rifle Contingent notifies that the firing of the second squad for the Ladies’ and Contingent’s medals is postponed until Monday next, as the marker is unable to approach his butt in consequence of the heavy flood in the creek. i A special meeting of the Phelan Relief Committee is convened for Monday evening next, on business of importance. Tommy Teague’s pedestrain perform-/ ance is postponed until Monday evening! next, when lie will commence at 10 p.nn* his great feat of walking 105 miles in 24 1 hours. 1 To those in search of merriment, visit S. S. Pollock’s, and obtain the great Irish song “ The Babies in our Block,” or “Little Sally Waters”, price sixpence. [Advt.]
