[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, March 10. His Excellency the Governor, left for the south in the steamer Hinemoa this afternoon. The Premier accompanies his Excellency on his southern tour. It is understood that on the return of the Premier the permanent allotment of portfolios will be made. The Gazette to-night contains the appointment of Walter Woods Johnston, to be Minister of the Executive Council and Postmaster-General; also that Major Atkinson has resigned the portfolio of Commissioner of Customs, and it has been transferred to the Premier. Payments at the Property Tax Office, Wellington, to-day included one of about £I6OO voluntarily made by the Hon. W, G. Tollemache, now resident in England, through his agent, Mr Valentine. This is for tax upon money lent on mortgage, nearly the whole of interest of which is payable in London, and does not pass through any agent in the Colony. It has been held that as the money was not under the control of any agent in Ne%v Zealand, Mr Tollemache was not legally liable to pay property tax on it. The Gazette contains a proclamation that Her Majesty’s has ceased to have any interest in that portion of native lands known as Patatere. •
Auckland, March 10. Mr Whitehorn, R.M., for Kaipara, died of typhoid fever in the Hospital. At the inquest on the body of Emily Barnett, a verdict of suicide, while in a state of temporary insanity, was returned. Dr Harley, master of the Industrial Home, has reported to the Committee cases of immorality between the children alleged to have occurred during the previous master’s management. The Committee are investigating. new Zealand , rifle association MEETING, NstiSdN, March 10. At the distribution of prizes, to the successful competitors at the Rifle Association Meeting, the cheques were made out for less thUn the amotint of prizes in all the Association matches, the Carbine men receiving 6s 3d in the £ less than the full amount, and the Riflemen 4s in the £ less. There was some loud expressions of dissatisfaction at first, but it was soon explained that the Association held itself responsible for the balance. To-day it was stated that a telegram was forwarded to Wellington yesterday with a view of getting the Bank of New Zealand to grant an overdraft of .£lO9, which would enable the prizes to be paid in full, and that a decline on the part of the Bank necessities that the prizes should not be paid in full at once. At a meeting of the Volunteers today, considerable dissatisfaction was expressed with the Wellington members of the Executive Council. It was then resolved that each local committee should do its utmost with the members to procure assistance from Government. WANGANUI RACES Wanganui, March 10.
