BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 8. 'Consols unchanged, 99|; New Zealand Five Per Cent. Loan has advanced to 102| (ex div); Five Per Cent. 1889 Loan remains at 110. The Bank of Australasia has declared a dividend of 6 per cent, fur the half year. Twenty persons have been arrested
in Ireland on warrants issued by the Viceroy under the Coercion Act. In the House of Commons to-day, a disorderly scene again occurred. O’Donnell, member for Dungarvon, was most unnlly, and defied the chair in violent language. He was then by the Speaker’s orders, suspended for the remainder of the sitting. March 9. Michael Boynton, the chief paid organiser of the branches of Land I eague, and who was one of the traversers in the recent State prosecutions, has been arrested in Ireland under the Viceroy’s warrant. He contends that as he is an American subject his arrest is illegal, and he claims the protection of the United States Government. The next series of wool auctions will commence on the 10th of May. The total quantity to be offered during the sales will be limited to 350,000 bales. The authorities in Ireland are vigorously employing the powers granted by the Coercion Act for the apprehension of persons guilty or suspected of treasonable conduct. In addition to the arrests already reported to have been made, warrants have been issued and are being daily executed against many other suspected persons. Intelligence has been received from the West Coast of Africa, which gives a complete disavowal of the reported intention of the Ashautees to attack the British settlements on the ooast. The news to hand states that envoys from the Ashantees have arrived at Cape Coast Castle, and have assured the Governor that the King has no desire to provoke war with the British. ■ ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, March 9. A severe storm has been experienced in Hobsons Bay, and a whale boat, containing three men, who were inspecting the lighthouse, is missing. It is feared they have been wrecked in the gale. March 10. The whale boat containing the three men, which it was feared had been lost in yesterday’s storm, arrived in the Bay all safe last night. In the Legislative Assembly last night, the debate on Murray Smith’s motion for a conference of each House on the reform Bill was concluded, and, on a division being taken, the proposal was ivjected by 40 to 33. Graves, Sir John O’Shannasay, and Sir Bryan O’Loughlin voted with the rainiority. Adelaide, March 10. The South Australian Ministry has resigned, and a re-constructed Ministry has been formed by Mr Morgan, as follows : Morgan, Chief Secretary : Fowler, Colonial Treasurer j Symon, Attorney-General ; Playford, Commissioner of Lands ; Hawker, Minister of Works ; Basedon, Minister of Education, It is considered probable that a modification of the policy set forth in Morgan’s recent manifesto will be favored by the new Cabinet. Sydney, March 10. The steamer Collaroy, which went ashore on the coast near Sydney on the 20th January last, is still in the same position. The was sold at auction today as she lies for £515. Brisbane, March 10. A serious fire occurred to-day at Toowoomba, Queensland, and caused a destruction of six houses. They were insured for £IOOO in the New Zealand company, and 1500 in South British.
