[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, February 22. A serious accident happened to-night at the Kensington railway crossing. A cab driven by one Keys, and containing Mr C. Armstrong, publican; Harry Mayo, publican; Lyons, Fairburn, and Griffiths was crossing the line about half-past-eight, when the goods train from the south came up. The engine driver whistled, but the cab did not get out of the way. The horse was killed and vehicle damaged. The driver was unhurt, but Mayo is not expected to live. The others were more or less injured. February 23. The final acceptances for the Champagne Stakes are—Mameluke, Amulet, Idalium, Omnus, Miss King colt, May filly. Christchurch, February 23. The body of the little girl Moore, who has been missed for the last ten days, was found this morning in the river near the cemetery. The last seen of her, it is said, was in company with a woman fashionably dresed, from which it is supposed she had been kidnapped; but it is also known that she was in the habit of swinging from the boughs of the willows overhanging the river. Nothing more definite has yet been ascertained as to how she got into the river. A number of youngsters this morning appeared before the Court charged with housebreaking. They got into an unoccupied house at the racecourse in which some tools were stored, and made free with the contents, under the impression, apparently, that they were nobody’s property. Thej shewed peculiar ideas about the nature of an oath, and the Magistrate, after a good lecture, said- he.- would have ordered the ringleaders a flogging if he could find them out, but'iri the absence of this he. dismissed them. The parents were present,. and offered various explanations of the conduct of their offspring. The case of the police against Toovey, a publican, was decided this morning. The point was whether the police were bound to give publicans notice of their intention to proceed against them, and the Magistrate was of opinion that they must have notice. The case was dismissed. At a meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to-day, Bell, the house steward, submitted a very exhaustive comparative statement for the years 1879-1880, showing a decrease in expenditure for latter year of £613 18s, The sura of £I6BO 9s 2d was paid in salaries. The weather is beautifully fine for the match to-morrow between Otago and Canterbury, Palmerston North, Feb. 23. A fire broke out at two o’clock this morning in a shop and dwelling in Broad street, the property of Mr Goodison, the building being totally destroyed. Young Goodison is one of the original prospectors of Fitzherbert’s reef, and as the premises were unoccupied he used them last evening for burning some quartz. He left at ten when all appeared right. The building was insured in the South British for £IOO. Gr\hamstown February 22. Procoffy, the man arrested on suspicion of Te Aroha murder is looking well, and eats well. Some comment has been caused by the Resident Magistrate refusing him an interpreter to confer with Brassey, his solicitor. The Russian Consul in Auckland has been telegraphed to, and acquainted with Mr Kenrick’s refusal of the application for an interpreter. It is also considered here to be unfair to the prisoner that Mr Kenrick, as coroner, at the inquest, should also sit as Resident Magistrate on the case, which comes on to-morrow. The stationmaster at Ohaupo, J. F. Pells, apprehended for embezzling £BO. The search for the missing man Stephenson, at Russell, was unsuccessful. Auckland, February 23. Edward Stephenson’s boat capsized off Kerekere, Russell. A boat put off, but Stephenson was missing. His coat and hat were found in the water. There was a narrow escape again of the Roman Catholic Chapel, Russell, through the scrub being fired in its vicinity. Father Pox and a number of volunteers extinguished the fire. AUSTRALIANS Y. AUCKLAND. February 23. The Cricket match was resumed today. Auckland in the first innings were disposed of for 90. The Austra-

lians were all out in the second innings for 117, the highest scorers being Boyle and Alexander 22 each ; Murdoch nil. The Aucklanders went in for their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn' for the day had lost 5 wickets for 7 runs.
